Weather in Wyoming can vary substantially, both with time
and altitude. Riders should be prepared for temperatures in the upper
elevations to be somewhat cooler than in the lower elevations. At higher
elevations, there may be hail, sleet and/or snow. Be prepared!
As a general rule-of-thumb, temperature will decrease about 5 degrees (F)
with each 1000 feet of altitude. So expect the temperature at Libby Flats
(10,847 ft) to be about 18°F cooler than what's reported in Laramie (7,284
ft at the airport), all other things the same. Expect temperatures in
Albany (the start/finish line at 8,400 ft) to be about 6°F cooler than
Laramie.
Daily temperature differences are also greater in this area than in
others. Expect about a 25°F temperature variation from the coolest to
warmest temperature over a 24-hour period (again, all other things the
same). Temperature swings between sunny and cloudy conditions are also
greater at higher altitudes.
Factoring all that in together, it's likely to be a bit warmer at Libby
Flats in mid-day than in Albany in the morning, as the normal daily
temperature rise will probably more than offset the temperature drop due
to altitude. But...Historically, thunderstorms are expected after 2pm in
about one of every 3 or 4 days at the higher altitudes of the road race
course, so prepare accordingly. At higher elevations, there may be
hail, sleet and/or snow. Be prepared! |

Real-time weather information sources are generally limited to sensors located at the Laramie airport, approximately 18 miles east of the eastern-most portion of the road race course, and at a similar altitude to the lowest point of the road race course.
